Yes Drill Sergeant! Written on April 21, 2009, by Katie.Wiedemann.

Many people struggle to lose that “last ten pounds”.

Follow along as I whip into shape through The Gym’s Bootcamp because I have a little white dress with my name on it.

So it’s over…but it’s not. Written on June 3, 2009, by Katie.Wiedemann.

Last Thursday was the final boot camp session.  It kind of ended without much of a bang,  but after the “wheel barrel” session I was alright with that.  It really couldn’t get any harder.  After wheel barrel night I went home to the scale where I have been weighing myself for the past year or so.  As I unfortunately predicted, no change. I just bobble four pounds back and forth.

On the last night I told Creighton that my weight has not dropped. I did not loose those pesky ten pounds. Here is what Creighton had to say:

Creighton: So this scale you have been weighing yourself on, how much do you think IT weighs?

Me: I don’t know, maybe 45 pounds.

Creighton: Do you think you could pick it up?

Me: Of course I can lift 45 pounds, I am really strong for a girl.

Creighton: Ok, but could you lift it over your head?

Me: I could probably lift if over my head but I probably wouldn’t be able to hold it there very long.

Creighton: Then here is what you do; pick up that scale, lift it above your head and slam it at the wall so it breaks into a million peices.  It’s not about what the scale says, it’s about how you feel.

So, I am not lighter. But I am faster, stronger, more toned and more flexible. I’m overall just feeling better.  I’ve really come to like this personalized way of working out.  And I am really digging the results.

My friend April and I are starting some personal training on our own with Creighton tonight. I never thought I would be one of those people who has a personal trainer, but I’m starting to like the sounds of it. Does it make me sound like Madonna or Debra Messing? Or Kelly Ripa?!! Please ,please say it makes me sound like Kelly Ripa!

When was the last time you wheel barreled? Written on May 27, 2009, by Katie.Wiedemann.

I’ve come to realize a lot of the work outs in this boot camp are really just like games we played as kids.  Back then who knew it was “work” ? At the time it sure felt like fun.

Last night was the first time Creighton had to whip out the ammunition.  While Tammy (co-owner of ” The Gym” and my wheel barrel partner) held my legs up for the last challenge of the night, I used my arms to walk from one end of the gym floor to the other. You probably remember wheel barrel races from when you were a kid. It was like that but mix in an extra 50 pounds of lower body weight and some serious inhibitions. It’s not as fun.  The conversation while wheel barreling went a little something like this:

Creighton: “Come on Katie, your wedding is just a few weeks away, you have to fit in that dress.”

Me: “(expletive) I am going to puke!”

Creighton: “It’s mind over matter. How bad do you want this?”

Me:  “( a more vulgar expletive) Creighton I WILL beat you.”

But alas, after a few stops I crossed the finish line…longing for my childhood.

Four down…maybe Written on May 18, 2009, by Katie.Wiedemann.

So, I just hopped on the scale (and by hopped I mean nervously dragged myself  there, eyes shut, breath held).  I am down four pounds!  That sounds like the beginning of a victory but my weight fluctuates four or five pounds all the time so I am left wondering if this is a down day or if this is a real change.  After the next boot camp session I’ll “hop” back on and let you know.

It’s a Miracle! Written on May 13, 2009, by Katie.Wiedemann.

I thought for sure, I was going have to sit this one out.  My thighs or my hamstrings or both felt like I was suffering an injury. I could barely walk.  Last week’s sessions worked muscles I haven’t worked in a long time. So,  in my head, the pain meant injury.

But just as we started to get warmed up, sure enough it started hurting less and less and I was right back in it.

As you can see in the attached video, during this session we did a lot to work our arms and abs. Those are the two things I really want to tighten up, especially in time for our wedding ( wow, it’s next month!)

I’m feeling really good at the end of each session.  I think its probably too early to see results, and so far, I am not. So for now, I’ll keep pushing as hard as I can, do my “homework” between sessions, and hope for a miracle.

Day One Written on May 6, 2009, by becky.ogann.

Katie Cam:

Day One: I was late. Anyone who knows me knows this is very common.  But I had a really good excuse this time. I had just stepped off a plane from New York City and had to race out to Courtside.

As of this first night there are just four of us in the class.  The Gym’s Creighton Kinny is the instructor.  I grew up with Creighton (Dubuque is such a big, small town).  He was the neighborhood kid that you loved to hate and hated to love. As an adult he is a great guy. I am amazed by his motivational skills. He pushes us to the limit, but is kind enough to know when enough is enough.

My good friend April is also taking the class. She is a volleyball coach so she was great motivation for me as I was sweating already during warm-ups.

We did a lot of whole body resistance work. I am very flexible, but also very uncoordinated, so some of it was easy for me, other things, near impossible.  I was really feeling the burn in my legs during the work-out, but I had no idea the pain I’d be feeling the next day.

When I woke up Wednesday morning, I could hardly walk.  Am I really this out of shape? I have been stretching and popping Tylenol and doing a lot of very dramatic complaining.  Having to listen to it, both my co-worker Jesse Gavin and my fiance probably want to strangle me. Right now, I kind of want to strangle Creighton!

Bridal Bootcamp: 101 Written on April 17, 2009, by Katie.Wiedemann.

I have to say, I knew this was going to happen. Two months away from our wedding day, and I’m STILL not in the physical shape I want to be.

Jason (my fiancé ) and I have been working out very consistently for the past year and a half.  The frustration of watching him quickly get more and more muscular, while I simply maintain my weight is enough to send me straight to the French Onion Dip.

It didn’t take me long to figure out I’d have to change up my routine in order to shed these last 10 pounds.

So, I’m now enrolled in the gym’s boot camp. The class starts Tuesday May 5. Yes, I will be working out instead of eating chips and salsa to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. From what I hear, it’s a pretty intense class that meets for four weeks. I believe it is going to be a combination of cardio, resistance training, and overall pain.

My friend and former KCRG photojournalist, Joe Willis, just finished boot camp in the United States Marine Corps officer training program. If he can do that, I certainly can take a beating for 90 minutes twice per week.

For me, this is not about having a “picture perfect wedding.” This is not about changing myself for a dress for one day. This IS about taking on a challenge, and what better time to face that challenge when I know I have a soon-to –be life partner waiting for me at the end of the aisle?
